Praveen (Prav)

Praveen (Prav) Alwis is an associate at Engel Law.

Originally from Toronto, Prav moved to Edmonton to attend the University of Alberta Faculty of Law in 2012, where he graduated with a Juris Doctor of Laws in 2015. Prav chose to remain in Edmonton upon graduation, and completed his articles at a general practice firm in 2016, and was admitted to the bar as a member of the Law Society of Alberta.

As a general practitioner, Prav gained experience in a variety of practice areas and has represented clients in Provincial Court and the Court of Queen’s Bench, in criminal, civil and regulatory matters. Prav has also appeared before the Alberta Transportation and Safety Board, the City of Edmonton Subdivision and Development Appeal Board, and the City of Edmonton Community Standards and License Appeal Committee. Prav also gained valuable experience working on CDSA trafficking and impaired driving files under the mentorship of senior criminal defense counsel.

Prav joined Engel Law in 2019, with an interest in focusing his practice on Criminal Defense, as well as Administrative Law and Charter litigation.

As a new Albertan and Edmontonian, Prav believes that there is a unique role for lawyers in such a rapidly changing city, where the goals of progress and fairness may sometimes conflict, when the interests of the state and the rights of the individual may not always align.
